Today is a day I’ve thought about for a long time. After years of reflection, writing, and, frankly, a lot of soul-searching, my memoir, “The Accidental Executive: Finding Purpose in Public Service,” officially launched today, Aug 5, 2025, on Amazon. It feels a bit surreal, like crossing a finish line that was once just a distant dot on the horizon.
This launch day, for me, isn’t just about a book hitting the digital shelves. It’s a culmination, a public declaration of a journey that began decades ago in the quiet hallways of federal buildings. You see, this book is my answer to that familiar, often cynical phrase: “Good enough for government work.” For too long, that whisper has implied mediocrity, a settling for less. But I firmly believe that public service, at its heart, is one of the most profoundly fulfilling and impactful ways to find your purpose and truly make a difference in the world.
In the pages of The Accidental Executive, I share my personal story, from my very first steps as a GS-1 clerk, where the squeak of my new shoes gave way to a whisper of uncertainty, to my time in SES leadership at the Pentagon, navigating the “Peace Dividend” downsizing. It’s a journey filled with unexpected turns, challenging moments, and the constant pursuit of excellence. It’s about pushing through bureaucracy, challenging the status quo, and striving for meaningful results even in the face of complex, often unseen, challenges.
This book was a labor of love and legacy. Putting this book out into the world feels a lot like those pivotal moments in my career: taking a deep breath, squaring your shoulders, and stepping into a strange new world, ready to face the challenges ahead. It’s a leap of faith, driven by the same purpose that guided me through my years in public service.
